Fox Cottage

Our stay at Fox Cottage was incredibly relaxing, peaceful, and exactly what we needed for a mini weekend getaway. The cottage is modern, beautifully designed, and filled with natural sunlight, which made the space feel warm, airy, and open. Everything was spotless, thoughtfully staged, and cozy enough that we truly didn’t feel the need to leave the property at all.The home was fully stocked with the essentials needed to cook meals and enjoy a comfortable weekend indoors. Even our pups enjoyed the trip—the yard is a great size for dogs to explore, although because the property is close to the main road, we didn’t feel comfortable letting them off-leash. Still, it was plenty of space for them to enjoy (even with the snow limiting their usual backyard running…haha).Overall, the experience was seamless, and the home was exactly as advertised. We also highly recommend booking directly through Vaguesthouses rather than Airbnb or VRBO. Even though we originally found the listing on VRBO, the pricing was cheaper by booking directly with the Host.Two areas of improvement to consider:1. Smart lock reminder: This is a smart home with a keypad lock, and the door automatically locks behind you. Upon arrival, we dropped our belongings (including our phones) and took the dogs for a walk before dark. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize the door would lock automatically, and we temporarily found ourselves locked out with no immediate way to communicate. Since the cottage is in a rural countryside setting, this almost quickly became stressful. Thankfully, my guy had his car keys and smartwatch, and we were able to pull up the email with the access code just in time. A quick reminder in the arrival instructions to keep the code handy before stepping outside would be very helpful and alerting neighbors of possible lockout incidents. We would have been completely stranded in the dark had we not had our smartwatch or car keys. Totally a lesson learned.2. Limited nighttime privacy in the main living area: While the abundance of sunlight during the day was a major highlight, we would have appreciated more privacy coverings at night. The bedrooms have blackout curtains, but the main living area has sheer curtains, and the front and back doors do not have window coverings. The photos are completely accurate—I simply didn’t consider how exposed it would feel after dark. I did reach out to the vendor, who submitted a request for accommodations (though it was not guaranteed). We had no safety issues at all, but having added privacy shades or curtains would have provided more peace of mind.Overall, Fox Cottage is a beautiful, quiet retreat and we would absolutely recommend it for anyone looking for a relaxing countryside escape. I rated 4 out of 5 simply because of the limited nighttime privacy.

Fox Cottage is located in the heart of wine country. It's perfect for two couples, and super convenient for exploring all the wineries in Afton and Crozet. Relaxing around the firepit was a perfect ending to each day.
