Reminiscing on UVA Graduation Weekend in Charlottesville

As a University of Virginia alumna, graduation week, affectionately known by Hoos as “Final Exercises”, is one of Charlottesville’s most special times of the year. The town buzzes with energy, from the bustling Corner filled with undergraduates savoring their final memories, to lively restaurant tables and families snapping photos in front of the Rotunda. Everywhere you look, there’s a sense of celebration.
I remember my own graduation from The Darden School of Business. My family was a bit late to book a vacation rental and ended up securing one of the last available spots at Misty Mountain Camp Resort. We’ve never gravitated toward corporate hotels—we wanted something more personal, a setting where we could truly spend time together. Packed into my parents’ RV, we did exactly that. Some of my favorite memories from that weekend weren’t just the ceremony itself, but the time spent together: a special graduation dinner at The Local in Belmont, and evenings around the campfire roasting s’mores and sharing stories. The celebration continued the next day at Pro Re Nata Brewery in Crozet, where a live band played and, at one point, a classmate’s dad jumped on stage to sing, prompting all of us to chant “Mr. Coco!” in support.
Graduation day itself remains one of the highlights of my life. There was so much pride, joy, and connection, especially after navigating the challenges of the pandemic. Every moment together in-person felt meaningful. We started early with the long-standing tradition of free breakfast burritos from 1515, followed by mimosas at what is now Ellie’s Country Club on The Corner. From there, we made the iconic walk, balloons in hand, up the Rotunda steps, across the Lawn, and onward to Scott Stadium. Seeing our families in the stands smiling, cheering, and waiting to celebrate with us was a moment I’ll never forget.
Today, I’m fortunate to call Charlottesville home. I’ve had the opportunity to build and grow Virginia Guesthouses, a locally owned hospitality company that has been welcoming guests to the area since 1976. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we remain committed to helping families experience meaningful, memorable stays during life’s most important moments across our portfolio of hotels, inns, and vacation rentals.
We will be opening our calendars for UVA Graduation 2027 on May 1, 2026 at 9:00 AM EST. We would be honored to host you and help you create lasting memories as you celebrate your graduate in Charlottesville.
